This addition not only enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance but also adds a subtle yet distinct flair to its silhouette. Beginning in the 1960s, BMW fell into a rhythm for design progression, sometimes by design and sometimes by chance, alternating major changes with evolutionary updates. The 3 Series is a good example; the E21 320i, introduced in 1975, represented significant change from the venerable ’02 models it replaced.

As evidenced by both the exhibition and talk at the House of BMW, the brand highlights how the joy of design, the creators, and the products they realize can spark positive change in the world. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse and Vision Neue Klasse X are bold beacons of this, leapfrogging vehicle generations and embracing a future-forward design language. By pushing the boundaries of creativity, embracing radical minimalism, and empowering the senses, BMW paves the way for an emotional, responsible, and attractive future.

The CFRP components for the side frame, rain channels, roof frame, cowl panel and rear window frame combine to form a “Carbon Cagep”. The BMW Group has employed its many years of experience in working with CFRP – amassed during production of the BMW i models and the current BMW 7 Series – to use CFRP intelligently to reinforce the body while also saving weight and improving vehicle agility. The Carbon Cage has evolved from the Carbon Core used in the 7 Series and allows the beneficial qualities of this high-tech material to be appreciated visually as well.

In the exhibition ‘FUTURE OF JOY’ by BMW Design, the brand unveils its vision of the future through the BMW Vision Neue Klasse at Milan Design Week 2024. During the event, Alice Rawsthorn, Design Critic and co-author of Design Emergency, and Holger Hampf, Head of BMW Group Designworks, further elaborate how design serves as a catalyst for positive change in the talk filmed by designboom – watch above. In the pursuit of better driving dynamics and stance, 3D Design offers a 20mm down lowering kit, optimizing the X1’s center of gravity for improved cornering stability and a more aggressive stance. Japanese tuning powerhouse 3D Design is launching of latest aftermarket program for the new U11 BMW X1. At the forefront of the tuning program are the meticulously crafted carbon fiber components. The front lip spoiler, featuring a mesmerizing 1×1 weave pattern, adds a touch of aggression to the X1’s facade while improving aerodynamics.

‘The car, as seen in Milan, is really only the start of an entire transformation of BMW’s product portfolio. It is a bold move that very ambitiously jumps product generation and introduces a model that looks and feels more like the future than any other car before. We want onlookers to turn their heads and know this is different, when they see this car on the street in the next years,‘ begins Holger Hampf, Head of BMW Group Designworks, in the livestream talk. The cornerstone of BMW’s vision of the future is the Vision Neue Klasse, which, together with the Vision Neue Klasse X, present a design perspective that engages users with all their senses. These holistic products – and especially the design and development processes to realize them – are the centerpiece of the exhibition ‘FUTURE OF JOY’ by BMW Design at Milan Design Week 2024.

As a result, around double the amount of data from vehicle sensors can be processed than was previously possible allowing for more advanced future assist systems. Recognizing the critical importance of public charging infrastructure to EV drivers in the U.S., BMW is partnering with EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast charging network and the first in the U.S. to be powered by 100% renewable energy. The new BMW Charging service will provide BMW EV and PHEV drivers with access to EVgo and partner charging network stations via an easy to use mobile app, underscoring BMW’s commitment to a high performance and zero emissions driving experience. BMW Charging Powered by EVgo will enable BMW drivers to see the real-time status of chargers, initiate a charging session, check their account status, and more. The BMW X Coupé is a source of creative inspiration, a harbinger of BMW design in the 21st century.

Milan’s Salone del Mobile is an important source of inspiration for BMW designers every year and is also vital for networking and sharing ideas with creatives from other disciplines, such as fashion, architecture and the arts. Exhibiting the new BMW design pillars of proportion, surface, and details, the X coupé establishes a direction for 1, 3, and Z Series cars, while the Z9 sets the tone for larger, more luxurious BMWs. Designboom was in attendance as BMW Group‘s creative studio Designworks opened its doors in Santa Monica alongside the 2023 Frieze Los Angeles art festival. The new LA studio covers an area of about 16,500 square feet and now stands as the largest of its three locations which include Munich and Shanghai. Since its inception, Designworks has expanded from hand-crafting clay models for vehicle design to developing all-encompassing mobility solutions for an entire urban ecosystem.

The installation also represents the evolution of the BMW Design principle from “form follows function” to “form follows experience”. This means human perception and not the function itself is ultimately the key factor in design decisions. On the inside, the individual character of a BMW is expressed in the special interplay of surfaces and lines that follows the layering principle. This refers to levels made up of different materials that are arranged on top of each other and serve different purposes, bringing alive the interior surfaces and dynamics. For the interior design of BMW cars, this layering approach ushers in a new, modern aesthetic and creates a visual lightness.

Cutting-edge nanofiber filter technology is used to purify the air inside the car more effectively. The BMW iX interior’s modern, spacious feel is helped by the slim instrument panel, which is covered in either standard Sensatec or optional microfiber fabric or natural leather tanned with olive leaf extracts. An ambience of modern luxury sets the tone for the BMW iX interior while the minimalistic design language gives the cabin an exceptionally spacious feel. The BMW iX’s numerous design accents can be ordered in high-gloss black or in signature BMW i blue.

The Designworks Studios’ new location puts them at the heart of Los Angeles’ cultural hub, close to Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer, who has produced many iconic sounds for BMW. This location, according to Van Hooydonk, offers “a unique perspective that goes beyond the automotive industry in the field of design.” The studio is also located where many talented artists and designers live. Being open to new ideas and striving for the perfect solution are a common thread throughout BMW Design’s “A Creative’s Journey” installation. The entrance portal, flanked on both sides by columns, resembles a car wash – symbolising the start of the creative process, in which designers rid themselves of all restrictive thinking that could influence their creativity. This is the only way for them to open up to unconventional inspiration and completely reinvent themselves.

The way in which the glasshouse tapers towards the back combines with specially designed air deflectors to reduce aerodynamic drag at the rear. Here, vertical Air Blades on either side of the rear window and the roof spoiler combine to form a sharp aero edge that minimizes the amount of vacuum produced behind the vehicle and its negative impact on aerodynamics. The combined benefits of the Air Curtains and Air Blades extend the car’s range by approximately 9 miles (WLTP measurement).
